CONSUMER RESOURCES
ID Theft is a crime in which the imposter obtains key pieces of information such as Social Security and driver's license numbers. IDENTITY THEFT is when they then use this information for their own gain. The victim is left with a tainted reputation and the complicated task of restoring his or her good name.
Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in our nation today. The thieves get your personal information by going through your trash, stealing your wallet, overhearing conversations made on cell phones, theft from unlocked mailboxes, as well as unsafe computer practices. These are just a few examples.
As in all crimes, reducing your risk through education and action is critical. While consumer education is not the complete answer to stopping this crime, it does empower you. Knowledge gives you the tools to minimize the chances that your identity might be stolen.
Identity theft is a complex crime. It keeps changing and evolving. Please check our website often for new information on scams, crime trends, and steps that consumers can take to combat identity theft.
